Devlog #001 — The Shards System
Why We Killed the Skill Tree
Every MMO has a skill tree. You level up, you click a node, you get a number. Repeat until max level. We've played hundreds of hours in systems like that and the core problem is always the same: the interesting choices are front-loaded in theorycrafting spreadsheets before you ever log in.
We wanted the interesting choices to happen in the world.
Enter Shards
A Shard is a piece of broken Ley Line energy — crystallized, unstable, and powerful. They drop from enemies, they're hidden in dungeons, they're traded by merchants, and some of them are only available during specific world events.
When you equip a Shard, it does two things:
- It gives you an ability. Could be a fireball, a teleport, a shield, a debuff. Shards span every archetype.
- It has a resonance value. Combine Shards with compatible resonance and you get amplified effects. Combine incompatible ones and you might get something unexpected — sometimes good, sometimes volatile.
There's no class. There's no spec. Your build is a set of Shards, and your build changes when you swap a Shard.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Early game, you're picking up whatever Shards you find. You're learning what they do. You might run a dungeon with a fire build because that's what dropped for you.
Mid game, you're hunting specific Shards because you've seen what a particular resonance combination does and you want to push it further.
End game, you're theorycrafting interactions that weren't in any patch notes. Because the system is data-driven, the combinations we designed aren't the only ones that exist — players will find emergent interactions we didn't anticipate.
That's intentional.
Current Status
The Shards system is functional in internal builds. We have approximately 80 Shards implemented with resonance data. We're targeting 200+ at launch across six resonance families: Void, Arcane, Flame, Stone, Tide, and Storm.
We'll be doing limited playtests with Discord members before public early access. If you want in, you know where to find us.
